What is an Evergreen Browser?
An Evergreen Browser is defined by its release strategy. Evergreen Browsers update silently and in the background. Popular examples are Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. Notably, Safari is not.1
Why does this matter?
Because Evergreen Browsers constantly update, sites that once worked can stop working. This is particularly true because while TC39 has a mantra of “Don’t break the web” there are no guarantees of backwards compatibility with Evergreen Browsers.
